2000

in this series of diptychs the artist questions the notion of the ideal represented by sculptures of women by the 19th Century neo-classical sculptor Antonio Canova in relation to portraits of contemporary women.

Photographed in familiar and work related spaces the almost life-size contemporary portraits suggest a similar but contradictory presence to the mainly allegorical sculptures. Combining the use of photography and digital processes these images explore the notion of ‘surface’ and ‘skin’ in relation to historical representation, the photograph and real women.

Work from Restoration Works is in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, Deutsche Bank and a private collection.
